Q4 Awareness Post: Drew Etienne
I enjoy Drew Etienne’s artwork that explores themes such as technology and man-made vs. nature. His medium is oil painting although he explores sculpture and inking. He was my University of Iowa Summer Art Residency teacher via Zoom last year. I enjoy his oil painting of shapes and the use of composition and color. Some of his collections include Parallel Worlds, Scape I, Scape II, Artificial Dimensions, Outsiders, and The Technosphere. Additionally, he is commissioned as a mural artist; his subject matter is completely different from his private art.
The Outsiders collection is rather interesting because it explores almost this alien-like floating object that is man-made. He uses highway structures, tractor parts, and bulldozers to convey a sense of looming. I think this body of work makes me feel uneasy and the shadows on the walls make it seem that we are in the painting.
I think the Scape II collection will influence my artwork due to the interesting color palette and composition. The shapes are rather jagged and some resemble houses. The perspectives are either 3 point or 1 point perspectives. Additionally, these landscapes resemble video game compositions and worlds. I think these cyberpunk worlds are fascinating.
