Q4 Awareness Post: Chris Long

He has prior experience as a sculptor and a mold member before setting to his current medium: oil painting. He tends to draw landscapes with a bright contrasting light source. Long taught himself to paint in 2011 and initially focuses on portraiture and still lives. Now, he travels the east coast in a motor coach which he paints from travel photo references he takes. He paints 2 to 4 originals a day and posts them on Instagram daily.
The painting of the red sky with palm trees in the background is gorgeous. He uses intense warm colors to convey a sense of brightness throughout the painting. Additionally, he has a knack for an impasto look. Due to his time constraint in painting landscapes, he probably paints with a palette knife for the most part to achieve an expressionistic look. I don’t particularly dislike anything about this painting. I want to use intense oil paint in my painting and include impasto strokes using a palette knife.
The painting of the blue sky and the palm trees as a beach scene speaks to me because it resembles the subject matter in my oil painting. I enjoy the use of bright colors and thick brushstrokes to create a sense of light standing out from the blue background. I don’t particularly dislike anything about this painting. I would like to use the same bright blue sky in my paintings and used very loose brushstrokes that show the paint lifted from the canvas.
